Video: Discussion with Claudia Malloy

Claudia Malloy has been organizing around environmental issues for over 30 years, and in that time she has unsurprisingly gained a wealth of insights into the field. She shared her experience working with the community of sportsmen commonly referred to as “hunters and anglers” to raise awareness of climate change with this relatively conservative audience. She emphasized having people on the ground in every area they were working in, choosing organizers who had previous roles in environmental spaces, and finding common ground focusing on mutual interests such as wildlife conservation. By drawing the link between the visible changes in animal migration and climate change, she and her organization (the National Wildlife Federation) were able to leverage the influence of hunters and anglers to raise awareness about climate change with their peers. She also shared her experiences combatting the Keystone XL pipeline and amplifying the voices of local ranchers to mobilize the movement.
