Partnerships Program

Partnerships Program

YPCCC’s Partnerships Program grows the capacity of the climate movement to conduct strategic communication campaigns to build public and political will for climate action. We work with diverse organizations ranging from local environmental justice organizations to international climate organizations, government agencies, companies, and foundations. We help organizations clarify their communication goals, identify and understand their audiences, use tactics and tools based on YPCCC’s research, and conduct their own studies.

How do we support the climate movement?

Strategic Consulting: Diverse organizations use YPCCC data, tools, and insights to inform their strategic decisions and develop tailored communication campaigns. For example, government officials use our research to develop policies aligned with the priorities of their constituents.  Foundations use the Yale Climate Opinion Maps to inform their funding strategies. Businesses use our data to identify potential customers. And advocacy organizations use our research to engage potential members, donors, voters, and others.

Membership Surveys: Organizations often survey their supporters to understand which issues to work on and how to engage and mobilize their members. Our Partnerships Program can help organizations interested in implementing membership surveys.

“The American Alpine Club staff sees climate change as one of the greatest threats to our sport, our lives, and our planet, but it wasn’t until working with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication to survey our members that we realized just how worried the entire climbing community is about the changing climate. Seeing this convinced us that climate was a winning issue, so we started Climbers for Climate.“

— Taylor Luneau, Policy Manager, American Alpine Club

Messaging Best Practices and Message Testing: One of the first rules of effective communication is to know your audience. YPCCC’s Six Americas segmentation tool and the Yale Climate Opinion Maps help organizations identify and understand their target audiences. We also advise organizations on communication strategies and best practices – for example, how to leverage social norms (e.g., when a majority of your community supports action on climate change) and efficacy messages to increase volunteer recruitment (e.g., you can make a difference). We also help communicators conduct message tests to identify the right messages, messengers, and platforms for maximum effect and cost-efficiency.

Microtargeting Models for Facebook and Voter Files: In April 2020 there were approximately 79 million Americans Alarmed about climate change and about 20 million “definitely” willing to join a campaign to convince elected officials to take climate action. This represents an enormous potential climate movement—if recruited, organized, and deployed. Millions more Americans are persuadable or simply need basic climate information. YPCCC has built microtargeting models for Facebook and the Catalist and Targetsmart voter files that can help your organization find and communicate with these audiences.
